LCD board
LCD board is ready, the final version of layout works without any problems, and everything fits into the space in the corner of the case, and doesn't block the airflow. This allows me to determine the shape of the bracket that holds the cards and the console jack.

Note to everyone who is going to make something similar (translation: here is the list of rakes that I have managed to step on while working on this):

Crystalfontz LCD module CFAH1602B-YYH-JPV does have a negative voltage generator (this is what "V" is for), and the pin 15 is its output. Backlight is only connected to "A" and "K". Pin 15 has nothing to do with backlight, and pin 16 is not connected to anything at all.

CFAH1602B-YYB-JP does not have a negative voltage generator, and its pins 15 and 16 are the same as "A" and "K" (backlight power).

You have to include some potentiometer (10K is ok) to be able to adjust the contrast, it should be between +5V and the ground if you don't have the negative voltage generator, or between +5V and negative voltage output (pin 15). The potentiometer's slider should be connected to the LCD power aka "contrast input", pin 3. And yes, it will have to be adjusted.

i am out of the loop

What are you building?

I added you because your username seemed familiar...it's the nickname of someone I sort of knew on efnet. And yet, it's been so long, I can't even remember which channel (#bsd? #root? #unix?) or what the irc abelits did for work.

So, what do you do for work?

Re: i am out of the loop

I was on efnet #unix, and I have started a company that is trying to build 1u and higher density servers and clusters made of them. Right now I am trying to complete the final production version of an 1u athlon/opteron server with thermosyphons-based cooling and some attempts of sane design made for easy maintenance/upgrade, usable in large racks, etc.

The board that I have completed is rather unremarkable compared to the rest of the box, it has front panel power/reset switches and an LCD on it. The space inside this kind of box is rather cramped, and it should allow for sufficient airflow over the hard drives and through the power supply (thermosyphons only cool the CPUs), so I had to be rather creative with the cables routing, boards/connectors/brackets design, etc.

Re: i am out of the loop

Ah, that reminds me of something I saw just the other day — the Internet Archive mirror for Europe. A guy who works for them posted the pics here.

I think my irc nickname in the efnet days was vlite44, or something like that. Good to run into you again!
