Hard drive errors - Alex Belits
Hard drive errors
Three days ago I have noticed something that I haven't seen in quite a while -- errors on the hard drive.

Phobos, my home desktop box, is running mythtv, and therefore writes a lot of huge .nuv files. Without any warning (and apparently unnoticed by the kernel), one file was written over a bad block, and then, when it went through commercials-tagging pass, mythtv got a read error, that produced a lot of swearing in the kernel log.

I wasn't happy to see that, and had to run fsck -c from Knoppix CD, however it only shown a few bad sectors in one chunk, the .nuv file was the only thing that stepped on it, and I haven't seen any errors since then. As for the file, it happened that all errors fallen within a commercial, that got skipped after the tagging completed on it.

Still, I am going to replace the drive.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. Knock on wood that this drive lasts a while longer. (No problems, but it is a Western Digital, and I'm a little skittish about them, seeing as my last computer that tanked had a WD drive, but I think it was the power supply that eventually screwed the whole box up.)

And then my external drive is also a WD... wonderful. Thank goodness I bought a DVD burner.

they now work even on non-DASD drives.
